Winding fault to shell

Insulation failure creates an unintended electrical path to the compressor shell.

What happens

Insulation failure creates an unintended electrical path to the compressor shell.

Typical symptoms

Protective device opens, or an isolated motor test indicates an unintended terminal-to-shell path.

Checks that distinguish this cause

Stop operation. Use the manufacturer's approved electrical tests with wiring and electronics isolated. Do not repeatedly energize to confirm the trip; damaged terminals can vent refrigerant and oil.

What can look similar

A grounded harness can trip protection even when the compressor itself is intact. A basic meter's OL reading does not prove insulation is healthy.

Repair direction

Replace the confirmed failed compressor and repair external faults; evaluate protection damage rather than automatically replacing every breaker.

Verify the repair

Verify the repaired circuit using the approved procedure before an operational check.

Equipment-specific limits

Single-phase C/R/S checks do not apply to every inverter or three-phase compressor. Use model data, isolate electronics as directed and never run or perform insulation tests under vacuum.

Practice this diagnosis

These simulated calls exercise this component or repair family. The article describes a broader diagnostic process; a call may represent a different cause within that family.
