Control transformer troubleshooting
Supplies the control circuit from the equipment power supply. Many conventional systems use nominal 24 VAC controls; communicating equipment may use a different supply.
Failure causes
Choose a cause for symptoms, checks that separate it from similar faults, repair direction and verification.
Missing primary power →An upstream interruption prevents the transformer from receiving its input; the transformer itself may be healthy.Open primary winding →A broken primary winding or an internal non-resettable protective device interrupts the input path.Open secondary winding →A break in the secondary path prevents the control load from receiving power.Shorted secondary circuit →An unintended low-resistance path between control supply and return draws excessive current. Pinched thermostat cable or a failed coil may be responsible.Control wire fault to chassis →Damaged insulation connects a conductor to the cabinet. If the circuit has a grounded secondary common, a supply conductor contacting the chassis can complete a short circuit.Excessive VA load →The combined operating or pickup demand of controls and accessories exceeds the transformer's approved capacity.Wrong primary tap or replacement rating →A transformer wired to the wrong input tap, frequency or output specification supplies the wrong control voltage or overheats.Internal winding fault or overheating →Insulation deterioration can create shorted turns or an unwanted path between windings or frame, increasing heat and reducing useful output.
